Week 6 - Group Progress

With the mid semester break just a week away it’s important that each group member know what they should be working on. There are a number of tasks that need to be done for the upcoming weeks.

These include
  • Individual Milestone
  • Group Presentation – Conflict
  • Illustrator Collage

We decided to split up the Illustrator collage into two sections. I will be doing the front more realistic MV Augusta section. Molly and Daming will be doing the rear section (Russel’s sketch) with Molly also assisting on the front if need be.

I will be also starting research on the group presentation as well as starting my individual Milestone report which is due week 9.

Week 4- 5 - 123D Catch

This week saw Molly and I venturing outside the classroom to take some photos of Russel’s MV Agusta motorcycle. The aim was to take multiple photos from 360 ⁰ around the bike from up high and down low. This would allow the 3D program ‘123D Catch’ to generate a 3D model from those pictures. The better the photos the better the model, so I brought my 5D along to take some high quality images.

The lighting on the day was quite bad. The time was about midday and the sun was at its strongest meaning that there were really harsh shadows. My camera has an inbuilt HDR function so I made use of that to expose for the shadows.

Once the photos were taken, we then started to experiment with the 123D Catch program to see how our projects would turn out. To our disappointment, we found it really difficult to achieve even a average model as the program would rarely make it past the ‘Photo Upload or Create Capture’ process. We later found out that everyone was having difficulties creating a model.

We found out that the program would not work with more than 70 photos and that they had to be a small size. Molly was able to create a average model but we have put it aside for later as we were waiting too much time on it.

I was able to generate a model but it was all over the place and looked like the program couldn't match the points of interest in the photos. I assumed this was because each photos was cropped to a different size and ratio.

Once all the illustrator work is complete, we will be venturing off to the Red Center labs to use 123D catch on those computers as they will most defiantly work better and faster.

Week 3 - Research and Tutorials

Starting this project is a bit tricky as I have never used Adobe Illustrator before nor have I created digital paintings so researching artists and tutorials was the first step.

Adobe Illustrator CS6 Interface
Talking with other groups who are also doing the same project, we exchanged tutorials and methods for completing this project.
Our first introduction to an artist who paints life like realism was the artist William Fisk. Russel posted a link to his website informing us of our target.

Realistic Painting

Looking at his work closely you then realise is that the illusion of realism is pulled off by the attention to shadow and highlight banding on the object. So the gradient of colour is broken down into bands of separate colours.

We were then introduced to another fantastic tutorial going further into the process using Adobe Illustrator. The concept is simple, outline everything from the bike parts through to the shadows just like a ‘Pain by Numbers’ or how a tattoo artist would draw his stencil. However the premise is simple, the process is very time consuming. This tutorial showed us the step by step process which was really helpful as all the detail can become a bit overwhelming.

Tattoo Stencil and Paint by Numbers

The last thing to do was watch tutorials to become familiar with the Illustrator interface. Having never used Illustrator before I had no idea where things were located so these tutorials helped immensely.

Week 2 - Back Brief / Team Members and Roles

Back Brief

Mission

To create the last Supermatist Sculpture. Supermatism was an art movement founded in Russia in 1913 focused around basic geometric forms. The idea behind the movement was that the works evoked a pure artistic feeling as opposed to the visual depiction of objects.

Using Adobe Illustrator and 123D Catch with the use of detailed photographs, we will create a 3D sculpture comprised of two motorcycles. One half will be a detailed 3D representation (MV Agusta), the other half (Honda CB750) will be a linear representation identical to Russel Lowes sketch, down to the last line.

Challenges
  • Learning adobe Illustrator
  • Creating 123D Catch Model
  • Learning about the CB750 and MV Agusta bikes and mechanics.
  • Group Collaboration
Outcomes

A Supermatist sculpture that fits the requirements of the brief and course outline.
The combination of a 3D representation of the MV Agusta bike in 123D catch with a recreated Illustration of the Honda CB750.
